A brief intervention for tobacco use in dental practice
Tobacco use is already part of the dental social history. Quix for Practice gives your team somewhere to send adult patients who smoke or vape: local community pharmacies with a GPhC-registered pharmacist and trained team on site. There is no form to complete, no record to transfer, and no cost to your practice.

Who this is for
Patients your dental team can mention this to
Written as clinical moments, not as a market description. If tobacco use is already in the conversation, signposting is appropriate.
Adults who currently smoke or vape
Captured in the social history at routine examination or hygiene appointment.
Patients with periodontal disease or poor healing
Tobacco worsens periodontal outcomes and delays healing after extraction or surgery.
Patients having implants, extractions or oral surgery
A practical moment to discuss how stopping improves bone integration and wound healing.
Patients with oral potentially malignant disorders
A brief, structured prompt to support smoking cessation as part of oral cancer prevention.
Patients who have declined or disengaged from the local authority service
A second option to offer when the first route has already been refused.
This fits inside your existing oral health and prevention conversations; it does not change the patient record or treatment plan.
How signposting works
Three steps, and none of them are yours
Your dental team raises tobacco use in the appointment
During an examination, hygiene visit or treatment planning, the clinician asks about smoking or vaping and mentions that a nearby pharmacy offers support.
The patient finds their nearest pharmacy
The patient card carries a QR code. They enter their postcode and see participating pharmacies near them.
The patient attends on their own
They present at the pharmacy counter and speak to the pharmacist. Nothing comes back to your practice.
Signposting, not referral.
No patient record moves between your practice and the pharmacy. There is no form, no system integration, no onward task, and no clinical liability for your practice. The patient chooses whether to go.
Participating pharmacies
Who the patient speaks to: a GPhC pharmacist and team
Every participating pharmacy is led by a GPhC-registered pharmacist, with a trained pharmacy team supporting the conversation on the high street.
The pharmacist discusses the full range of options available, including licensed nicotine replacement therapy and the local authority stop smoking service where one operates.
